Story by Jamie Lyn Castaño. Jamie’s story was a defining one from her childhood. She told the story of a moment of vulnerability between her and her father after her parents separated. It was in that moment that Jamie felt her childhood was over and she spent many years trying to fix her family, only to realize as she got older, it was never her job to do so. In answering my questions, Jamie mentioned that in that moment, she wished her Dad had put his hand on her knee and told her that it was okay and that this was not hers to carry.

A reminder that sometimes our children take on the world, especially when they see a parent–someone who is normally there for them–hurting. Sometimes all they need is a hand on their knee, saying: “It’s okay, this isn’t yours to carry.” Sometimes something that simple can change a whole narrative.
